Primary Care Optometry - New Mexico VA

Mission Statement

The mission of the New Mexico VA Healthcare System at Albuquerque optometry residency program is to provide qualified post-doctoral optometric graduates with advanced clinical experiences and knowledge in primary care optometry with an emphasis in ocular disease. Through direct patient care in a hospital-based setting, the resident will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to diagnose and manage complex optometric conditions in a Veteran population with multiple systemic comorbidities and associated ocular sequelae. The resident will further advance their clinical knowledge and evidence-based decision making by engaging in didactic and scholarly activities. Additionally, the residency program will promote the development of life-long learning skills that will enable residents to provide high quality patient-centered care throughout their optometric career.

Program Description

A hospital-based program emphasizing ocular disease in a primary care setting. Extensive experience is available in the management of patients with ocular and systemic disease. The program includes: direct patient care, interprofessional care coordination, case review, participation in interdisciplinary in-service meetings, self-study and scholarly activities.

Research Responsibilities

Scholarship Requirements:

The Resident is expected to present a poster/presentation at a regional or national meeting, or write a paper of publishable quality.

Completion Requirements

  1. The Resident is required to deliver clinical services at a level which demonstrates they have attained the core competencies of the program. This attainment will be determined through formal evaluations of the resident's patient care.
  2. The resident is required to keep a log of patient names and associated information.
  3. The resident must complete the scholarly project requirements including a paper of publishable quality, presentations to interdisciplinary physicians and staff, and seminar presentations.
  4. The resident must attend required seminars.
  5. The resident must complete all required evaluations of clinical attendings, the program and the Program Coordinator.
  6. The Director of Residency Programs in conjunction with the Residency Program Coordinator will recommend the granting and certification to the Dean. Upon completing the requirements of the program to the satisfaction of the Program Coordinator and the Director of Residency Programs, a certificate of completion will be awarded to the resident.

The following are required for program admission:

  1. Doctor of Optometry degree from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education prior to the beginning of the program.
  2. Must pass all parts of the NBEO prior to the beginning of the program.
  3. An optometry GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) or higher - exceptions may be made at the program coordinator's discretion.
  4. Eligible for state licensure by the beginning of the program.
  5. Be a U.S. Citizen
