Combined Residency & Graduate Degree
Program Description
This combined program provides optometric graduates the ability to gain additional experience in patient care while developing teaching and clinical research skills necessary for a variety of careers in industry, education and specialty private practice. Currently, the program offers post-graduate clinical training in any of the following residency areas: Brain Injury Vision Rehabilitation, Cornea and Contact Lens, Family Practice Optometry, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Ocular Disease, and Pediatric Optometry.

Educational Opportunities
The graduate program provides basic and advanced courses in vision science, anatomy and physiology along with training in computer programming, experimental design, and biostatistics. The clinical program provides advanced training in the specialty selected by the resident. Teaching experiences, seminars, and participation in the emergency call service are also integral components of the two year program.Teaching Responsibilities
All candidates are expected to gain experience in teaching and are assigned to these activities according to their background and interests.Research Responsibilities
All residents are trained to do experimental research with emphasis in clinical areas of interest. A thesis is required for the graduate degree.Completion Requirements
- Successful completion of graduate degree program requirements (see program for details)
- Eligibility for a state Optometry license no later than six months into the residency program.
- The resident is required to deliver clinical services at a level, which demonstrates they have attained the core competencies specific to their program. This attainment will be determined through formal evaluations of the resident's patient care.
- The resident is required to keep a log of patient names and associated information.
- The resident must complete the scholarly project requirements specific to their program. This is either original or library research resulting in a paper of publishable quality.
- The resident is required to deliver three rounds-style presentations.
- The resident is required to successfully complete all clinical rotations assigned in the core and elective curriculum.
- The resident is required to successfully complete all teaching assignments.
- The resident must attend required seminars, journal clubs and case discussions.
- The resident must complete all required evaluations of clinical attendings, rotations, their Program Coordinator and of the Residency Program.
- The Director of Residency Programs in conjunction with the Residency Program Coordinator will recommend the granting and certification to the Dean. Upon completing all requirements of the program to the satisfaction of the Program Coordinator and Director of the Residency Programs, a certificate of completion will be awarded to the resident.
Curriculum requirements in hours:
5 day work week between 43 to 47 hours per week; including after hours on-call.
Program Admission Requirements:
- Doctor of optometry degree (OD) from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE)
- Application to the Graduate Degree program
- Two letters of reference from clinical faculty members
- Copy of all optometry transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae and a letter of intent
- Successful completion of NBEO Part I, Part II and TMOD prior to commencement of the residency program
- Preference is given to candidates with a 3.0 (out of 4.0) GPA or higher
