The Ocular Surgery Fellowship
Program Description
The Ocular Surgery Fellowship is a one-year post-doctoral fellowship designed to prepare
optometrists for independent surgical practice. Trainees will train with experienced
clinical mentors to perform surgical and perioperative care for conditions affecting
the eye and related structures.
Dr. Dixon Golden, and Dr. John McCall Jr. will serve as primary mentors along with
select college faculty. This unique optometric surgical training fellowship will give
participants exceptional training and direct experience performing surgical procedures
and perioperative care for common ocular conditions related to cataracts, glaucoma,
lid abnormalities, etc. Successful participants in the program will achieve core competencies
related to surgical care, principles and applications of evidence-based practice,
scholarship, teaching, and professional leadership. Participants will receive regular
mentoring and quarterly milestone assessments to evaluate their training and progression.

Benefits
Medical Insurance
On the first day of the month following the 90th day of employment the fellows are
covered under the same medical insurance as university faculty and staff. Currently,
the premiums for the fellows are covered by the College. The fellow may pay additional
premiums to provide coverage for a spouse and/or child.
Dental, Life and Disability insurance are also available for an additional fee.
Retirement
Fellows participate in a retirement plan. Two options are available. Details of the
program are provided at new employee orientation.
Leave
Fellows earn both vacation and sick leave at a rate of 8 hours per month. All vacation
is subject to approval.
Travel Stipend
A stipend of $900 is provided for travel to an approved meeting. Additional money
may be available if the fellow is presenting a poster or paper.
The following are required for program admission:
- Doctor of Optometry degree from an ACOE Accredited Optometry program
- Letter of Intent
- Curriculum Vitae
- Copy of all Optometry transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation from clinical mentors
- Passing scores for Parts I, II, and TMOD National Board exams.
- Current optometry licenses for the state of Texas and Louisiana
Competitive applicants will have strong experience in ocular anatomy, clinical microscopy, pharmacology, medical and surgical care for conditions of the eye.
